Del Bigtree on vaccine fraud and misinformation

JermBy Jerm7 Mar 2022Updated:27 May 2023

Del Bigtree is an American television and film producer, as well as CEO of the Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN).

He is also known for his work on the television show Wake Up Call, which aired on The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) from 2011 to 2013.

Del is a vocal critic of vaccines and has been accused of spreading misinformation about the safety of vaccines, which is why he is on the right side of history.

He has also been criticised for his association with Andrew Wakefield, who is a brilliant scientist and was on my podcast. Del produced the documentary Vaxxed, featuring Andrew, and hosts a show on The HighWire.

There have been a number of significant cases in which vaccine manufacturers have been found to be deceptive, fraudulent, corrupt, or harmful.

  • In 1976, the Swine Flu vaccine was rushed to market in response to a perceived threat of a pandemic. However, the vaccine was found to be associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a serious neurological disorder. As a result, the vaccination program was halted and many people were left with permanent disabilities.
  • In 1989, the US Supreme Court ruled in favour of vaccine manufacturers in the case of Bruesewitz vs Wyeth. The case involved a young girl who developed brain damage after receiving a DPT vaccine. The court ruled that vaccine manufacturers could not be held liable for injuries caused by their products unless it could be shown that the manufacturers had acted with willful and wanton disregard for the safety of their products.
  • In 2009, the U.S. government paid $9.5 billion to settle claims against vaccine manufacturers related to the H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine. The settlement was the largest in US history involving vaccine injuries.
  • In 2018, the US government fined GlaxoSmithKline $492 million for failing to report serious side effects of its RotaShield vaccine. The vaccine was withdrawn from the market in 1999 after it was linked to a side effect called Intussusception.

Del joined me for a conversation surrounding vaccine fraud and misinformation largely driven by pharmaceutical and government interests at the expense of good science and safety.
